Based on type, EDTA derivatives is divided into disodium EDTA, calcium disodium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, and others.

Disodium EDTA is a salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (commonly known as EDTA). Disodium EDTA is in many products as a preservative, to stabilise it, or to enhance the foaming action. It’s also used as a chelating agent.

Calcium disodium EDTA is a white, odorless, crystalline powder, with a faint, salty taste. In the food industry, it is commonly used a preservative and sequestrant. Besides its use as a food additive, it is used in the textile and paper industries. It is used to improve stability in pharaceutical products, detergents, shampoos, soaps, argricultural chemical sprays, contact lens cleaners and cosmetics. It is used in medical laboratories and dentist offices.

Tetrasodium EDTA is the salt resulting from the neutralization of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid with four equivalents of sodium hydroxide (or an equivalent sodium base). It is a white solid that is highly soluble in water. Commercial samples are often hydrated, e.g. Na4EDTA.4H2O.

The global EDTA derivatives market is segmented into different types, with disodium EDTA being the dominant type, followed by tetrasodium EDTA, calcium disodium EDTA, and others. In 2023, disodium EDTA reached a value of $303.96 million, tetrasodium EDTA was at $184.72 million, calcium disodium EDTA was valued at $17.49 million, and the ‘others’ category accounted for $47.59 million.

Comparing the year 2018 with 2023, disodium EDTA had an increase from $225.58 million to $303.96 million, tetrasodium EDTA grew from $139.25 million to $184.72 million, calcium disodium EDTA increased from $13.30 million to $17.49 million, and the ‘others’ category rose from $37.84 million to $47.59 million. This indicates a growing market for EDTA derivatives across all types, with disodium EDTA leading the expansion.
